Dream 561

'Do You Believe in Duality?'
Dream date: 9 February 2016

Scene 1: Domestic Interior - Night
There was a dream scene which I can no longer recall properly. This took place in a domestic interior and I was with various members of my family. There were some cakes involved and also some dispute. I remember that there was a lot of movement from one room to another, not just by me, but other dream characters in this scene.

There was also a male dream character with me, who I wanted to spend time with. I think I was being told that he had to leave. I was feeling frustrated.

There was some reference to aliens or some weird creatures which were not from Earth. This was a significant part of the dream. I am not sure if I saw the aliens/weird creatures, or if there was just reference to them. This is the part of the dream I most wish I could recall.

I then went upstairs to a bedroom. It seemed to be my parents' bedroom in my former childhood home in Pine Grove. Sheringham. The room was very dark - but blue in tone. It was like the room was filled with a lot of hazy blue mist/smoke. I sat on the bed - the side closest to the window (this had been my Mum's side). On the other side (my stepdad's side) was an Asian male (i.e. from the Indian sub-continent) - someone I knew well in the dream, but not the earlier dream character male from the earlier part of the dream. I think I know this Asian male in my real-life, but I cannot say who it was, as he did not look like anyone I can recognise, I just felt that he was very familiar, and this feeling persisted when I woke up from this dream and thought back. I was saying to the male that I believed in 'duality' (I meant 'dualism' - see Dream Information section, below). I said: 'Some people believe that the mind and brain are separate, but I think they are the same'. The male said to me: 'In dreams, people can convince themselves anything is true'. I wondered if he meant that I was right, or those who believe in duality (dualism) were right, so I asked: 'But what do you think?' He replied: 'You are'. This didn't answer the question I asked him, but it did answer the question which existed in my thoughts ('who is right?'). I didn't find it odd that he could read my mind. He said: 'Dreaming and consciousness gives people evidence'.

I cannot recall anything else about this dream.

TIME: 22:00 - 12:00 hours (I woke up from this dream)
LUCIDITY: PRE-LUCID? It seems that the discussion at the end of the dream was a hint that I was in a dream, although I did not become aware that I was dreaming at all
SPECIAL NOTES: NONE OF NOTE

Dream Information:

  • Dualism: in the Philosophy of the Mind, dualism is the position that there is a separation between the mental phenomena of the mind and the physical body (i.e. the brain). Dualism is associated with the notion of 'souls' - the part of the self which can exist outside the physical body and therefore, after death. The philosopher most linked to the idea of dualism is Rene Descartes (1596 - 1650). He perceived the mind as being the source of consciousness and self-awareness, whereas the physical brain is the seat of intelligence and logical reasoning. There are many arguments both supporting and opposing the idea of dualism which emerge from many different disciplines. The most compelling evidence against dualism comes from physics, biology and neuroscience.
  • Monism: this posits that the mind and the physical brain are singular when in the context of the mind-body debate.

Dreamsigns:
  • A dream character seemed to be able to answer my dreams

Recurrent Dream Themes:
  • My former childhood home in Pine Grove, Sheringham

Potential Day/Dream Residue:
  • Before I went to sleep and had this dream I was reading an online article about the creepiest/scariest pages on Wikipedia - there were quite a few pages in the list which related to aliens or unexplained creatures
  • Thinking about dreams and the nature of consciousness

Waking Thoughts & Emotions:
This dream was so interesting - especially when I recalled the entire dream upon waking. Unfortunately, I was interrupted while recalling my dream and lost a lot of the material, although the final part of the dream was so clear to me.

* I have forgotten the first 70% or so of this dream, which is very unfortunate. When I first woke up, I remembered the whole dream, but then, as I was laying in bed thinking about the dream to consolidate my dream memories (immediately upon waking), a random person (not someone on my Facebook - a man who had seen my profile and taken a liking to me for some reason) started to call me on the Facebook call function (this produced a very loud and irritating sound). I tried to end the call and immediately this person called again. Having to quickly block him to stop the noise and harassment meant I forgot my dream! If I recall anything further, I will record it below.

  1. Interesting dream content, just a few hours ago i was pondering on the idea of duality. I've come across the concept many times but could not explain it if I was asked to. Perhaps it is a coincidence.
