Why Do We Believe in Our Dreams?

Lucid dreams can happen spontaneously and naturally, or we can mentally train ourselves to intentionally induce lucid dreams. But lucid dreaming is not the default - the majority of dreams, even for 'natural lucid dreamers' are those of the normal, non-lucid variety. This leads us to question why this is so - why aren't all of our dreams lucid? Why do we accept the bizarre, extraordinary and impossible nature of our dreams and question them? There are many theories as to why we don't question the reality of our dreams, which will be explored in this article. 


Depth Psychology is the study of unconscious processes and motives, typically from the perspective of psychoanalytical theory. The term 'Depth Psychology' was coined by Psychiatrist Paul Eugen Bleuler (1857 - 1939). The theory here suggests that in order for our subconscious minds to perform the psychological therapy which takes place in dreams, we must be unconscious and passive participants. 

Dreaming provides a form of psychological healing as well as contributing to memory and learning consolidation, personality integration and catharsis. Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939) propounded the theory that dreams are a way of satisfying primal urges and desires which are unacceptable in civilised society, thereby characterising dreams as a form of wish fulfilment. According to Freud, while we are dreaming, our subconscious represses doubt and critically-thinking because the healing nature of dreaming requires us to believe in what we experience. Note that other dream researchers, such as Psychiatrist Allan Hobson, argue against the idea that dreams have any particular meaning or purpose, concentrating on biological explanations (i.e. dreams as makeshift narratives which arise from random brain activity).

However, these theories, stemming from Depth Psychology and Psychoanalysis, do not provide ground for claiming that the psychological therapy offered by dreams acts as a mechanism for non-lucidity, they simply provide a explanations of the psychological purpose of dreaming. If these theories did explain the psychological therapy of dreaming as a mechanism for non-lucidity, this would suggest that it would be impossible for anyone with unreconciled psychological or emotional conflict to experience lucidity in a dream, which we know is not true. 

Developmental Psychology suggests that the brain is pre-programmed to dream - even foetuses in the womb experience the phenomenon of dreaming, before they have any grasp on their own existence or the world they will be born into, with its laws of physics. This means that the dream world and it's bizarre and fluid imaginative constructs left impressions on the subconscious brain before waking reality. It may be that these 'foundational memories' left such as imprint on the subconscious, they they still guide subconscious expectations, which offers an explanation for why we do not challenge the 'reality' we experience in our dreams - it was the first 'reality' we experienced as foetuses in the womb. Newborn babies spend an average of 8 hours in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep each day, again, reinforcing the fact that our first experience of reality takes place in the world of dreams, with the rules of waking reality coming later.

Psychologist Jean Piaget (1896 - 1980) studied children's dreams and found that children's acceptance of dreams gradually changes from a belief in the reality of the dream to understanding that dreams are a 'story' inside their heads. 

We have different expectations in the real world and the dream world. Obviously, rules (laws of physics as well as social norms) are much stricter in the real world than in the dream world, suggesting that our brains are hardwired to recognise the boundary between the real world and the dream world and the respective rules which exist in each - the boundary between these worlds is 'waking up' - which the brain accepts, enabling it to adapt to the different sets of rules without question. 

An example of this mechanism failing is when we experience a false awakening. This phenomenon occurs when the dreamer finds themselves on the boundary between wake and sleep. The waking self (the waking 'I') is activated, while still within the hallucinatory nature of the dream world, which in itself is an effective gateway to lucid dreaming. 

Our brains process and interpret sensory data from our environment, which is received via the 5 senses of sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. However, it is possible to trick your brain into receiving and interpreting other forms of data or information too - via the imagination, hallucinations or dreaming. The key here is perception - the brain does not necessary question the input it receives nor discriminate between different types of input. This provides an explanation for why the brain does not alert you to the fact you are awake or asleep and dreaming. 

Conscious awareness is a function of the conscious mind, which is deactivated during sleep, and therefore we accept our dreams as reality, without questioning them. Furthermore, the hallucinatory dream imagery which is triggered in the brainstem can be perceived by the brain as being as realistic as waking stimulus and perception. This profound and extraordinary effect is why our dreaming brain invents false memories and often complex narratives to explain what you are experiencing in the dream. A sudden snap to consciousness in the dream provides sufficient insight triggering lucidity. 

Professor Mark Blagrove, a sleep scientist, states that dreams - and nightmares - are a form of simulation which have an evolutionary purpose. Our dreams feel so real to us because in the dream itself, we have no other form of reality to compare - unless we are lucid, our waking reality does not exist. Blagrove states that the inability to become consciously aware we are dreaming is an evolutionary selection, as dreaming has evolved as a form of 'threat simulation' so that we can practice our survival techniques while asleep - in order for this to be effective, we must believe in the reality of the dream.

As you can see, there are a number of theories as to why we believe in our dreams, and why not all of our dreams are lucid dreams. Just like the majority of dream science, much of this is theory and guesswork and much remains to be discovered through dream science, studies of consciousness and neuroscientific research.

The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreaming is a rewarding, awe-inspiring and liberating experience, which many personal benefits. Lucid dreams are largely free from real-world consequences and allow dreamers to indulge in fantasies without fear, inhibition or reprisal. Lucid dreaming permits us boundless escapism, creating a natural high and sense of power, opening our eyes to the fact we can 'hack' our own minds and harness a set of cognitive skills from within the dream world. Lucid dreaming also enables us to have profound insight into ourselves, encouraging us to question the nature of reality and consciousness.

However, the benefits of lucid dreaming are not just present in the dream world - there are many benefits for real waking life too! One of the overall greatest benefits of lucid dreaming is the fact that we are able to incubate or create lucid dream scenarios in advance, by focusing on what we most desire or wish for in a lucid dream.

Experiencing the impossible
Lucid dreaming enables dreamers to experience the impossible - you can literally do anything in a lucid dream as the limits are as far as your imagination can stretch. The laws of physics don't constrain you!

One of the most popular lucid dreaming experiences sought by lucid dreamers is the ability to fly in lucid dreams. All you need to do is believe that you can fly like a bird, and you will find yourself soaring through the sky, weightless. 

Lucid dreamers might also experience the impossible in terms of obtaining super-human powers, travelling through time or exploring the far reaches of the universe, meeting fictional or historical characters - there really are no rules as to what is possible in a lucid dream.


Sexual intimacy
Imagine a scenario where you can summons any sexual partner - real, fictional or imaginary - and indulge in any form of sexual intimacy you so desire. Lucid dream sex is one of the most popular experiences sought out by lucid dreamers, because it enables not only fantasy sex with someone who might not be available in the real life, but also has little to no repercussions in waking life. I say 'little' - as it depends on whether you are using lucid dream sex to break sexual taboos (which might lead to desensitisation or normalisation of those taboos) or indulging in acts you feel guilty about in waking reality - these can obviously have the potential for some effect on your psychological well-being in some circumstances. 

Lucid dream sex is not a form of 'infidelity' - I'd argue it is no different in concept to fantasising while using pornography as a stimulus; the difference is that the stimulus exists in your mind and requires no extrinsic aids or human interaction. If you have any concerns about how your partner might feel about lucid dream sex with another person, you could discuss it in advance or simply choose to keep your lucid dream sex fantasies/experiences as a secret - there's no way you can get caught out!

Lucid dream sex is a great way for lonely people to experience sexual intimacy which might be lacking in their waking reality. The experience of sex in a lucid dream can be a very intense and satisfying feeling - the fulfilment of primal urges without inhibition or the need to abide by social norms. It is possible to experience incredibly powerful orgasms through lucid dream sex. 


Increased self-awareness & insight
Due to the nature of lucid dreaming, it is possible to explore the inner self, stripping back the core beliefs or preconceptions that have been instilled in us from childhood. In Robert Waggoner, Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self (2008), the author refers to a separate consciousness which exists within, which can be accessed through the lucid dream. In the lucid dream, you can converse directly with your subconscious mind and discover deep truths about yourself which might not be accessible or comprehensible in waking reality. You can guide this discovery process by asking questions of your consciousness within the lucid dream and examining the answers provided, which may enable you to gain levels of self-awareness and insight not possible in your waking consciousness. 

You might also use lucid dreaming to discover deep personal meaning in life - by talking to your subconscious and asking it to show you your life's purpose. This can enable you to evolve your life's meaning and purpose with a new form of conscious awareness, and the advantage here is that such insight is not reserved for those with spiritual beliefs. You are finding meaning within yourself, rather than having to look beyond for a 'greater' meaning.


Enhancing real life skills
In Stephen LaBerge, Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming (1990), the author provides a testimonial from a surgeon who reported the ability to improve and refine his surgical skills from within his lucid dreams - which enabled him to reap the benefits in his real life profession. Indeed, such improvement of his skills were much quicker than would be expected in real life. Athletes and musicians have also reported using lucid dreams to enhance their real life skills. This is because the tangible experience of performing and practicing certain physical activities in the artificial world of lucid dreams can transfer to real life muscle memory. In addition, lucid dreamers can realistically rehearse mental and emotional responses which have some benefit in real life.


Problem-solving & decision-making
Lucid dreaming is a great way of 'thinking outside the box' when it comes to problem-solving and decision-making. Not only can you seek help within the lucid dream by asking for possible solutions, but you can act out the various solutions to a problem or tough decision within the lucid dream and check the results. It is possible to incubate a lucid dream by 'implanting the seed' of that chosen/desired dream using highly effective dream incubation techniques, which work for both lucid and normal, non-lucid dreams. All you need to do is focus your waking mind on the question or problem you require help with.


Exploring creativity
Lucid dreaming is a fantastic means of exploring inner creativity and tapping into new channels of creativity which might not be readily accessible to the conscious, waking mind. This is due to the free-flow of ideas that occur in a lucid dream. Lucid dreaming provides an extraordinary way of finding inspiration - you can simply ask your subconscious to show you something to inspire you, or you could actively seek to travel to a place of inspiration or summons a particular visionary genius of your chosen field, as a dream character, and use them as a mentor. 

Artist Salvador Dali (1904 - 1989) famously used lucid dreaming to increase his creativity and inspire his art. He referred to this process as 'slumber with a key' and spoke of channelling the fluid space between wakefulness and sleep. The creative associations he made between memories, fleeting thoughts and concepts and imagery occurred during the hypnagogic stage of sleep and therefore are likely to be forms of microdreams. One of his most popular and recognisable paintings The Persistence of Memory (1931) was inspired through this process. There are many other notable examples of creatives/artists or scientists/inventors using lucid dreaming and hypnagogia to formulate new ideas and tap into new sources of creativity and inspiration.


Coping with grief & bereavement
No matter what your beliefs, faith or worldviews on death and the afterlife, lucid dreaming is an excellent way to reunite with dead loved ones. When coping with bereavement, there is often a feeling that matters have been left unresolved, especially if the death of a loved one was sudden and unexpected, or certain things were left unsaid when the person was alive. Lucid dreaming enables the dreamer to reunite and interact with their dead loved one and deal with unresolved matters by seeking closure or finality - or simply enjoy the experience of spending time with them in the dream world. The benefit of this is that the lucid dream provides some form of psychological or emotional therapy, allowing capacity for grieving and healing. Lucid dreaming can help us keep the memories of our dead loved ones alive in a very realistic sense, even if we are fully aware that they are a projection of our own psyche and subconscious.


Overcoming phobias, fear & trauma
Lucid dreaming is a great way of confronting and overcoming phobias, fear and trauma in a safe way with no real life consequences or risk of harm. Clinical Psychiatrists and Psychologists have reported that lucid dreaming provides a therapeutic benefit for sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder, as the experience of confronting the source of trauma in a lucid dream creates new neural pathways in the brain which can help in overcoming the fear in real life.

tallulah talks 10 | confessionals

I've started a new series of videos on my Youtube channel - tallulah talks 10. The premise of this series is that I film for exactly 10 minutes, and talk stream of consciousness-style about whatever is on my mind at that specific moment, revealing my current state of mind and contemporary thoughts, feelings, emotions and moods. The video is ended at the 10 minute mark, regardless of whether I am in mid-stream or have finished all I have to say. The concept is a sort of 'talking therapy' as well as a chance to share insights into my personal and private life. I film these videos on my mobile phone, meaning I can record in a plethora of outdoor environments.

The Proust Questionnaire - Version 2.0

Recently, I made a Youtube video where I took the Proust Questionnaire on camera. At the time of recording the video, I couldn't remember if I had ever recorded/published myself taking the Proust Questionnaire before, so obviously was unable to consciously recall any answers I might have had for any of the questions.

Looking back across this blog, I discovered that I had answered the Proust Questionnaire on 21 January 2016 - my original answers to the Proust Questionnaire, can be found, by clicking here, which will take you to my previous blog post. On that occasion, it appears that despite linking the Wikipedia entry in that post, I decided to take the basic version which appears in Vanity Fair. I have no explanation for why I chose to answer that particular version of the questionnaire. Below, I have linked my new Youtube video with the 2019 answers to the Proust Questionnaire. 


Comparing answers
Obviously, I have to take into account the fact that I have two different sets of questions here, which means my answers will vary in that context. 

In general, I think that my answers are pretty similar - in many cases, they are identical, or, when giving longer spontaneous answers in my video, I touch upon my previous answers as possibilities. 

What I am able to see is the impact my relationship with JR has had on my outlook on life - this is the factor which seems to have changed my answers from 2016 to 2019.

The 'Reality' of Dreaming: Why isn't Every Dream Lucid?

Dreams are the ultimate form of fantasy - we are so immersed in the landscape and narrative of our dreams that we accept them as our reality while we are in the dream world. Unless we are lucid dreaming, we only identify the dream as distinct from our ordinary perception of conscious reality when we awaken and start to compare the dream to what we know to be true of waking life.


In my time spent on online lucid dreaming forums, I stumble across many anecdotal claims from oneironauts who claim they can experience several lucid dreams per night, every night; or alternatively, complain that they lucid dream 'too much'. I find it very hard to believe that these people experience lucidity so frequently, especially given that many of them claim that they learned to lucid dream through lucid dreaming induction methods (so, were not natural lucid dreamers) and their lucidity continues even when they are not actively trying to induce a lucid dream. 

I am not suggesting that it is wholly impossible for someone to experience a lucid dream every night - Perma-Lucid Dreamers account for a very small fraction of those who can lucid dream. It's just not the norm for someone to suddenly start lucid dreaming on a nightly basis just because they averted their mind to the desire to learn how to become lucid. Often Perma-Lucid Dreamers are not aware their dreams are lucid, or different from those experienced by the general population - because they do not have a comparison by which to recognise this.

This led me to research why we don't lucid dream every time we fall asleep. For new readers, a lucid dream is one in which you are consciously aware that you are dreaming while in the dream state - it may be possible to change or control what happens in the dream, but this is not necessarily true of all lucid dreams. I have many lucid dreams where I cannot control anything, and all my attempts are frustrated or impossible.

In order to address why we don't lucid dream every night, I decided to read up on Depth Theory - the study of the unconscious, interpersonal aspects of human experience, which focuses on the phenomenon of dreaming as well as complexes and archetypes. Many Depth Theorists follow Jungian psychology, which addresses the concepts of the psyche, human development, personality formation, and individuation. Individuation is a process of bringing our unconscious potential into a concrete living reality - it is a process which helps to secure a bridge between an individual and the unconscious, as well as the individual and his/her wider social community. By incorporating both an inner and outer exploration, a person can discover a more potent sense of meaning and purpose in life. Carl Jung (1875 - 1961) believed that psychological distress is a result of an imbalance within the individual that often is experienced as an alienation from the deeper personality - known as the 'Self'. Jungian psychotherapy seeks to restore the individual’s connection to the Self. This effort can be achieved through the therapeutic relationship, dream interpretation, active imagination, and work with expressive therapies.

This theory suggests that in order for our dreams to provide us with a form of unconscious therapy while we sleep, we must be passive within the dream state. The dream can only help us to achieve catharsis, healing or personality integration if we accept the reality of the dream as genuine. The brain is almost hardwired to avoid lucidity in the dream state - parts of the brain that we use during our waking lives, such as the logical, fact-checking part of the brain - are deactivated during sleep, to allow us to dream freely and unconsciously. One theory is that we need to accept the dream as reality so as not to arouse ourselves into wakefulness. 

The brain is responsible for interpreting sensory perceptions - sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. However, it is also able to process other information - such as imagination, dreams, hallucinations etc. When asleep and dreaming, the brain does not tend to discriminate between the types of input it receives and therefore, the brain does not alert the dreamer to the fact they are dreaming, rather than experiencing waking reality because the conscious part of the brain is switched off. The brain operates in such a manner that it actually creates false memories to explain the dream content and fool us further into accepting it as reality. One way of becoming lucid is to train yourself (using cognitive methods) to identify dreamsigns - the bizarre or impossible events of a dream which could only occur if you were dreaming - and confirm you are in a dream state by performing a reality check. But even for seasoned lucid dreamers, this isn't always as straightforward as it sounds - essentially, when we teach ourselves to induce a Dream-Initiated Lucid Dream (DILD), we are hacking our brains and overriding what our brains are biologically programmed to do.

There is another explanation for why not all our dreams are lucid - from the perspective of Developmental Psychology. This holds that when we were foetuses in the womb, we experienced dreams - before we were even aware of the laws of physical reality and logic. These foundational, inuetro dreams may leave impressions on our subconscious, which is a reason why we do not necessarily challenge the reality of the dream and become lucid in all the dreams we experience in later life, even after we attain knowledge as to how our waking life affects our subconscious dream world. 

Developmental psychologist Jean Piaget (1896 - 1980) studied children’s dreams and described how children’s acceptance of dreams gradually change from a firm belief of dreams as reality to an awareness that dreams are just a 'story' inside their minds while asleep. This explains why we may begin our sleeping life believing that dreams are real because we are born dreaming. Newborn babies are in the REM sleep state for an average 8 hours per day. REM is the sleep period considered most favorable and fertile for ordinary (non-lucid) dreaming. The dream world is, in many ways, our first and natural world, and the waking world with all of its rules comes later.


Why Do We Accept the Bizarre Reality of Dreams?

This leads me to an interlinked subject - why do we accept our dreams as real while we are dreaming them?

When addressing the altered reality of our dreams, we might look to the research of Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939) who also believed that dreams were a form of therapy or emotional healing process. In order for us to resolve an inner conflict or obtain wish fulfilment, we must believe in the reality of the dream, and therefore, in the dream state critical thinking and doubt are repressed so that we can fully believe in the dream. 

Psychologist Allan Hobson adopts a neurological approach to dreaming, which challenges the idea that dreams have any intrinsic meaning to us. He claims that dreams are simply makeshift and inconsequential narratives, stemming from random brain activity while we sleep. The dreamer makes the best of a bad script, and the result can be nonsensical or bizarre. Due to the fact that areas of the brain that sustain working memory are weakened while we sleep, logic is compromised during dreams. Hence, the dreamer accepts these bizarre situations and transitions in time and space as real.


Theories of Dreaming

Here are some key theories as to why we dream and why we might accept the reality of the dreamstate: 

1. We Dream to Practice Responses to Threatening Situations
This is the 'Threat Simulation Theory' propounded by Antti Revonsuo, a Finnish cognitive scientist, who produced evidence to show that our amygdala (the area of the brain responsible for the 'fight-or-flight' response) fires more than normal during REM sleep  In REM sleep, the brain functions in a similar way to when it's specifically threatened for survival during waking life. In addition, the part of the brain which practices motor activity (running, fighting) fires increasingly during REM sleep, even though the limbs are still due to muscle atonia/sleep paralysis. Therefore, Revonsuo and other evolutionary theorists argue that in dreams, we are actually rehearsing fight-and-flight responses, even though our limbs are not actually physically moving during sleep. Revonsuo believes that dreams are an evolutionary adaptation - we dream in order to rehearse behaviours of self-defense in the safety of night-time isolation which prepares us for actual waking situations where me may need to utilise these skills for survival. This explains why mammals (specifically cats) - who also experience REM sleep and dreams - have been shown to 'act out' hunting dreams when the part of the brain responsible for REM muscle atonia/sleep paralysis has been deactivated or removed. Hunting is a means of survival for a cat in the wild - and seeing the acting out of physical movements associated with hunting and catching prey allows us to identify the possible content of the cat's dream. As modern humans, our dreams tend to reflect waking life concerns and emotions - we might see these are modern versions of 'threats' to our survival given that the majority of people living in the developed world no longer need to rely on hunting and gathering as a means of survival, nor need to physically protect ourselves from predators.

2. Dreams Create Wisdom
If we remembered every image of our waking lives, it would clog our memories. So, dreams sort through memories, to determine which ones to retain and which to lose. Matt Wilson of the MIT Center for Learning and Memory argues this perspective. In one study, Wilson put rats in mazes during the day, and recorded the patterns of neural activity as the rats negotiated the maze. When he watched the rats enter REM sleep, he saw that the same neuron patterns fired as those which had fired at choice turning points in the maze. In other words, he saw that the rats were dreaming of important junctures in their day. Wilson argues that sleep is the process through which we separate the memories worth encoding in long-term memory from those worth losing. Sleep turns a flood of daily information into what we call 'wisdom' - and we can use this acquired intelligence in real waking decision-making.

3. Dreaming is Like Defragmenting your Brain's Hard Drive
Francis Crick (who co-discovered the structure of DNA) and Graeme Mitchison put forth a famously controversial theory about dreams in 1983 when they wrote that 'we dream in order to forget'. This means that the brain is like a machine which connects its data in certain ways (obsessing, defending or retaining), and that those thinking pathways might not be the most beneficial for us. When we sleep, the brain fires much more randomly and this random scouring for new connections allows us to loosen certain pathways and create new, more advantageous ones. Dreaming is a shuffling of old connections that allows us to keep the important connections and erase the inefficient links - analogous to the defragmentation of a computer's hard drive. Dreams are a reordering of connections to streamline the system.

4. Dreams are a Form of Psychotherapy
For many theorists (including Freud) dream are principally a means by which to confront difficult and surprising emotions and deal with those emotions in a new way. Ernest Hartmann, a doctor at Tufts, focuses on the emotional learning which happens in dreams, developing the theory that dreaming puts our difficult emotions into a visual language. In dreams, we deal with emotional content in a safe place, making connections that we would not make if left to our more critical or defensive waking brains. In this sense, dreaming is like a form of psychotherapy - we think through emotional stuff in a less rational and defensive frame of mind and are able to come up with solutions which may not be available to the conscious mind. Through that process, we also come to accept truths we might otherwise repress. 

5. The Absence of Theory
Others - such as Hobson, above - argue that dreams have no meaning at all - they are merely the random firings of an unconscious brain. The mind is still 'functioning' insofar as it's producing images, but there's no conscious sense behind the narrative. Perhaps it's only consciousness itself that wants to see some deep meaning in our brains at all times and therefore our waking brain projects meaning onto the meaningless dream content in order to explain our experience of dreaming.

Normal Non-Lucid Dreams v Lucid Dreams 
- A Neuroscientific Comparison

In order to understand the difference between normal dreams and lucid dreams, we can identify neurological differences between these distinct brain states. This sheds some light on why we might accept normal, non-lucid dreams as reality and do not question events in the same way we would if awake or in a lucid dream. A very interesting journal article tackled this precise theme - see Dresler et al, 'Neural Correlates of Dream Lucidity Obtained from Contrasting Lucid versus Non-Lucid REM Sleep: A Combined EEG/fMRI Case Study' (2012) Sleep 35(7), 1017 - 1020. I have summarised the findings of the study, below for the purposes of discussion:

In REM sleep we experience the most vivid and intense forms of dreaming - however, these dreams (when non-lucid) are deficient in reflective thought and metacognition. Instead the internally generated perceptions and emotions experienced during dreaming typically show many cognitive peculiarities, with a bizarre dream narrative full of gaps, delusional thought, and a complete lack of insight into the fact that we are dreaming. These cognitive constraints (i.e. lack of awareness or rationality) are thought to be related to the neural activation patterns associated with REM sleep, particularly deactivation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.

In contrast to normal dreaming, lucid dreaming denotes a rare state of sleep comprising cognitive features of both waking and dreaming. During lucid dreams, subjects become aware of their dreaming state, have full access to memory, and are sometimes able to volitionally control dreamed actions. Although standard polysomnographic criteria of REM sleep are maintained (and REM sleep muscle atonia - commonly referred to as sleep paralysis - prevents overt motor behaviour), lucid dreamers are able to communicate their state by predefined volitional eye movements, clearly discernable in the electrooculogram. 

Lucid dreaming can be trained and has been successfully utilized for the treatment of nightmares or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, neural changes which accompany dream lucidity, and their role in the amelioration of dream disorders, are not yet well understood. When compared to non-lucid REM sleep, lucid dreaming is associated with increased 40-Hz activity (known as 'gamma brainwaves'), and increased coherence in frontal regions, as has recently been shown by quantitative EEG. Neuroimaging data, delineating the neural correlates of lucid dreaming, have not yet been obtained and analysed. While in a later study Dresler and his colleagues analysed how the skill of lucid dreaming served as a tool for tracing specific motor activity in dreams, the current study aimed to reveal the neural correlates of lucidity per se by contrasting lucid vs non-lucid REM sleep using a combined EEG/fMRI approach.

Neuroimaging studies have shown that human REM sleep is related to characteristic patterns of regional brain activity - during REM sleep, neural activity in the brain stem, thalamus, amygdala, and extrastriate temporo-occipital cortices increases, while the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the precuneus show deactivation. 

This specific pattern of neural activity has been proposed to reflect the visual hallucinations, emotional intensifications, and cognitive abnormalities typically experienced in dreams. In contrast, lucid dreaming is characterized by a regaining of higher cognitive capabilities, eventually leading to the awareness of the dreaming state. 

Recent quantitative EEG data have shown that this 'waking' intellectual clarity is paralleled by neural activations in frontal and frontolateral regions. Likewise, PET data show cognitive control in dreams to be associated with activation of frontal cortex components.

In the current study, Dresler and his colleagues present neuroimaging data showing lucid dreaming to be associated with neural activations in a specific network of cortical regions. In line with the study of Voss et al (see 'Lucid dreaming: a state of consciousness with features of both waking and non-lucid dreaming' (2008) Sleep, 32, 1191 - 200), during lucid dreaming the researchers observed increased activity in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is thought to underlie a wide range of higher cognitive capacities, as evidenced also by the dysexecutive syndrome seen in patients with lesions in this region. In particular, the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was associated with self-focused metacognitive evaluation. 

While in normal dreams, working memory is strongly impaired, activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (in combination with parietal lobules, which were also found to be activated during lucid dreaming) may reflect working memory demands related to task performance in the study. Further, there was observed increased activation in bilateral frontopolar areas, which have been related to the processing of internal states - i.e. the evaluation of one's own thoughts and feelings.

The strongest increase in activation during lucid compared to non-lucid REM sleep was observed in the precuneus - a brain region which has been implicated in self-referential processing, such as first-person perspective and experience of agency/autonomy. While in normal dreams, attention is often hyper-associatively driven by the (pseudo-)external dream scenery, lucid dreaming is - by definition - characterized by a reflection on one's own state of mind.

Interestingly, Dresler et al found activation in the bilateral cuneus and occipitotemporal cortices. These areas are part of the ventral stream of visual processing, which is involved in several aspects of conscious awareness in visual perception. While these activations seem initially puzzling, since non-lucid dreams are also characterized by vivid dream imagery - they are in line with anecdotal reports of lucid dreamers who state that lucidity is associated with an exceptional brightness and visual clarity of the dream scenery.

While lucid dreaming is an intriguing phenomenon in its own regard, it can also serve as a tool for the study of dream disorders - for example, nightmares and PTSD. Neurocognitive models of disturbed dreaming emphasize a hyper-responsivity of the amygdala in nightmare generation, coupled with a failure of medial prefrontal regions to dampen this activation. Lateral prefrontal regions have been shown capable to influence amygdala function through connections to the medial prefrontal cortex. Increased lateral prefrontal activation during lucid dreaming therefore fits well with the therapeutic effects of lucidity training on recurrent nightmares. 

If lucid dreaming can also be utilized in the treatment of other dream disorders - for example, terrifying hypnagogic hallucinations, or pathological dream vivification, is an open question that warrants further investigation and research studies. In summary, the study by Dressler et al found that, in line with recent EEG data, lucid dreaming is associated with a reactivation of several areas normally deactivated during REM sleep. This pattern of activity can explain the recovery of reflective cognitive capabilities that are the hallmark of waking life and also lucid dreaming.

Have You Seen This Man? (Debunking the 'Dream Hoax')

'This Man'
You might have seen online posts asking 'have you seen this man in your dreams?' with accompanying images of a photofit drawing of an unattractive, but relatively commonplace male face. These posts tend to be accompanied by editorial text, explaining that this man has been appearing in the dreams of people across the world, and often give explanations such as 'astral projection' of a dream character - or other equally implausible, and un-empirically testable phenomena. This article aims to expose the urban myth and provide an explanation for why it has proven to be so popular. 


The website www.thisman.org, dedicated to the myth claims in its headline that hundreds of people dream of this man every night. The website claims that in January 2006, a mentally ill client of a New York psychiatrist sketched an image of 'This Man' after he appeared repeatedly in her dreams, often giving her advice on her personal life. She was certain she had never met the man in her waking life. The psychiatrist circulated the image amongst other clients and subsequently, a number of clients, who saw the image, also claim to have been visited by This Man in their dreams. 

In 2009, the thisman.org website was launched, stating that it was exploring the mystery of This Man and asking people to submit accounts of their own dreams in which This Man appears.

Since then, over 2000 people - none of whom appear to share any relationship or common trait - have reported also being visited by This Man in their dreams. A number of the dreams - some romantic, some nightmarish - have been recorded on the thisman.org website, which also includes sketches of This Man produced by dreamers (see below). All anecdotal 'evidence' of This Man dreams on thisman.org is recorded anonymously.

On the thisman.org website there are also a number of photographs of posters/flyers appearing in public places around the world, with the original photofit image, asking if anyone has 'seen this man?' I have posted some of the images, below. 

Often, when This Man 'appears' in a dream, he gives strange, almost prophetic advice to the dreamer. In some instances dreamers have had relationships with This Man - falling in love with him, even if they identify as a heterosexual male in their waking life; or alternatively, have been subjected to a violent act or murder by him. All dreamers reporting the appearance of This Man in their dreams claim that they do not know or recognise him from waking life.

Here are some of the submitted accounts of This Man dreams from the thisman.org website:

'I have had this recurrent dream for some years now. A tall, dark man shows me a picture and asks me if I can recognise my father in it. The man in the picture is this man I have never seen before, he looks nothing like my dad, nevertheless I inexplicably answer that I do recognize my father. At this point I usually wake up feeling very peaceful. Other times the dream continues, I am standing before my father’s grave, I place some flowers on the ground and I realise the photograph on the tombstone is missing.'

'I fell in love with him from the very first time I saw him in my dream. Even though if I think about it I must admit he’s really ugly. And yet each and every time, he sweeps me off my feet with his romantic gestures and sweet words. He buys me flowers, jewellery, he takes me out to dinner or to the beach to watch the sunset.'

'I have always had this dream of flying in the sky over my city and observing my friends from up there. Since I moved to another house I started meeting this man while flying. Not every single time that I have this dream about flying, but often enough. He flies too, but he never speaks.'

'The first time I had a dream about this man I was having a hard time at work. I had a dream about getting lost in a huge and deserted shopping mall. Suddenly this man appeared and I started running away from him. He chased after me for what seemed like an hour until I found myself against a wall in the kids’ area in a supermarket. At this point he smiled at me and he showed me the way out towards the cash desks and I woke up. Ever since that night this man has appeared in all of my dreams and he always gives me directions to get out of the dream and wake up.'

'I dreamt this man…was Brazilian and very handsome. He was a schoolteacher type with 6 fingers on his right hand. He said if the US had a nuclear disaster: go North!'

'I have seen this man in 3 completely different dreams. He was slightly different from the picture, but I recognized him immediately. He appeared suddenly and disappeared in the same manner. His message in all 3 of my dreams was: 'It’s all over'. That was repeated 3 times in each dreams. The differences in the picture and the man in my dreams are: his hair was a little longer in the top; his eyebrows were not as bushy. Other than that, he is identical. I had no fear of him, but many questions.'


The thisman.org site also includes a section addressing potential theories for the appearance of This Man in dreams. These are reproduced below:

ARCHETYPE THEORY
According to Carl Jung's Psychoanalytic Theory, This Man is an archetypal image belonging to the collective unconscious, which can surface in times of hardship (emotional development, dramatic changes in our lives, stressful circumstances etc) in particularly sensitive subjects. 

RELIGIOUS THEORY
According to this theory, This Man is the image of the Creator i.e. one of the forms in which God manifests himself today. This is the reason why his indications and the words he utters during the dreams should be decidedly followed by the dreamers. 

DREAM SURFER THEORY
This is the most interesting theory and the one that has the greatest implications, but it has also the lowest scientific credibility. According to this theory, This Man is a real person, who can enter people's dreams by means of specific psychological skills. Some believe that in real life This Man looks like the man in the dreams. Others think that the man in the dreams looks completely different from his real life counterpart. Some people seem to believe that behind this man there is a mental conditioning plan developed by a major corporation. 

DREAM IMITATION THEORY
This is a scientific psycho-sociological theory which claims that this phenomenon has arisen casually and has progressively developed by imitation. Basically when people are exposed to this phenomenon they become so deeply impressed that they start seeing this man in their dreams. This works on the basis of day residue (i.e. experiencing the image of This Man in waking life - and the image/theme emerging in a subsequent dream, because it has been imprinted on the subconscious mind of the dreamer. 

DAYTIME RECOGNITION THEORY
This theory states that the apparitions of This Man are purely casual. Normally we do not remember precisely the faces we see in our dreams. The image of This Man would therefore be an instrument which, in the subject's waking life, facilitates recognition of an undefined oneirical image.

THE HOAX, DEBUNKED
However, the real explanation is a lot less scary than the thisman.org website suggests - although equally as interesting. You see, the This Man myth is just that - fake. It was a hoax, created by sociologist, journalist and online marketer, Andrea Natella. Natella runs an online viral marketing company, Guerriglia ('Guerilla') Marketing, which specialises in 'subversive hoaxes' and 'weird art projects exploring pornography, politics and advertising' in the avant-garde tradition of the Situationists. The hoax has been reported on Vice (who initially believed the hoax, but then published a retraction article, highlighting the fact they had been scammed the very next day) and also the knowyourmeme.com website. The latter site debunked the myth, claiming that its popularity is due to internet 'copypasta' and inclusion on a number of websites who bought into the hoax. In fact, Natalla's site was briefly acquired by horror movie production company Ghost House Pictures, in promotion for an upcoming film titled This Man, written and directed by American filmmaker Bryan Bertino - which, according to imdb.com - is still 'in production/development'.

So - it seems that Natalla's viral marketing campaign was very successful indeed! However, the fact that this was a worldwide hoax does not mean that everyone who thinks they have met This Man in their dreams are lying. I tend to believe that the beauty of this hoax is the fact that once you are aware of it, it is possible that you experience This Man in your dreams, as a result of imprinting on the subconscious or the effect of day residue (our waking experiences which shape and influence the content of our dreams). There is also another theory - which would explain why some people claim to have met This Man before having seen his image (or learned of the story) online. This is the EVERYMAN THEORY. The theory works on the principle that the face of This Man is an amalgamation of many common male facial features, - it was cleverly designed as a kind of 'catch-all' which rouses an impression of familiarity in those who believe they have seen him in their dreams. Consider the following, for example:
  • His hair is full and yet also balding
  • His eyes could be any color at all
  • His lips are partly full (bottom lip) and partly thin (top lip)
  • He has no distinctive race/ethnicity
  • His face shape is simultaneously angular and round
  • Cover the lower half of his face and he looks old; cover the upper half and he looks young - so his age is non-distinct
  • Cover the right half and his eye is hooded, his nose large and his lips full; cover the left half and his eye is smaller, his nose petite and his lips thin - it's a very different face altogether 
These myriad common features mean that many people, from all over the world, might find familiarity in his face and therefore seek to perpetuate the viral nature of This Man, thereby furthering the goal of Natalla, in making this a highly popular and ubiquitous campaign based on free publicity.

Blindness & Dreaming

Blindness & Dreaming
One of the questions I often see posed on lucid dreaming and dreaming forums is: how do blind people dream? Some people have questioned whether blind people dream at all...

One study which was conducted at the University of Hartford (1999) undertook an analysis of 15 blind people and 372 recorded dreams from this sample. The results showed that those people with congenital blindness, or who lost their sight before the age of 5 years, did not experience visual dreams. This is because our dreams are largely made up of waking life experiences (as well as our desires, wishes, fears and anxieties), and therefore, those who have no experience (or memory) or visual or light perception will not manifest visual imagery in their dreams. 

Many people who become blind in later life tend to report that the faces of familiar people (who they saw when their sight was intact) become gradually more blurry in dreams over time and do not 'age' in the dreamworld - they appear exactly the same as they were at the time the blind dreamer was able to see them in waking life.

People who lost their sight later in life report that they experience visual dreams for longer periods, post-blindness. Of the subjects who lost their sight between the ages of 5 - 7 years, some reported visual dreams and other did not. However, there seems to be no link between the intensity, richness and imaginativeness of dreams and visual content. 

It is assumed that blind people experience some form of sensory compensation; like those of sighted people, dreams are composed of, and representative of, their real-life experiences and sensory perception, meaning dream content is likely to involve sound, smell, taste and touch. 

According to a study published by researchers from the University of Copenhagen and Glostrup Hospital in Denmark in Sleep Medicine (2014) supports this theory, claiming that the dreams of blind people contain the sensory perceptions which they use to navigate their waking lives. Among congenitally blind volunteers, 93% heard, 26% tasted and 40% smelled in at least one dream. The study involved 50 adult volunteers; 11 who were blind from birth (or congenitally blind), 14 who became blind after age 1, and 25 sighted controls. The study lasted 4 weeks, during which dreams were recorded and sensory perceptions/emotional themes analysed. As expected, all the sighted subjects reported seeing visual imagery in at least one dream, while none of the congenitally blind subjects reported any. Amongst those who lost their sight after age 1, the subjects who lived with blindness the longest reported the fewest visual impressions in their dreams. 

Blind participants experienced other senses more intensely than subjects in the sighted control group. About 86% of blind subjects reported hearing in at least one dream, but only 64% of the control group subjects did. About 18% of the blind subjects tasted versus 7% of controls and 28% of the blind subjects smelled in at least one dream, compared with 15% of the control group subjects. A huge 70% of the blind subjects reported that they experienced touch in their dreams, in comparison to 45% of the control group subjects. Distinguishing between congenitally blind subjects, 93% heard, 26% tasted and 40% smelled in at least one dream, while 67% experienced touch. Blind subjects’ dreams were just as bizarre as those of their sighted counterparts. Both groups’ dreams also featured similar amounts of successes, failures and social interactions, and the same frequency and intensity of each emotion.

Studies have also shown that blind people seem to experience more nightmares that people with sight. In the 2014 study, it was found that About 25% of congenitally blind participants reported that at least one of their dreams was a nightmare, versus 7% of the later-onset blind group and 6% of the sighted control group subjects. This may be due to the evolutionary theory of dreaming, which suggests that our dreams and nightmares are 'threat simulations' - mental rehearsals for potentially distressing life events, which prepare us and help us develop or practice coping or survival mechanisms. Common themes of nightmares experienced by blind people tend to involve getting lost, being hit by a car or losing their guide/seeing eye dog. 

Similar trends in a study published in Neural Plasticity (2015), in which 14 congenitally blind and 14 sighted individuals sniffed sweat samples from volunteers who had watched film clips which evoked emotions of amusement, fear, disgust or sexual arousal. Congenitally blind subjects did better than control group subjects at identifying fear and disgust. Ron Kupers, a faculty member at the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology, who led both the Sleep Medicine and Neural Plasticity studies, explains: 'If you don’t have any visual input, you have to get information from other sources'.

Kupers is currently investigating which aspects of visual memory – the ability to visualize colour or faces, for example – fade first in individuals who suffer from late-onset blindness. Another ongoing study will compare the sleep patterns of sighted and congenitally blind subjects, some who have had their eyes removed. Kupers expects blind individuals (who lack so-called non-image forming retinal ganglion cells which are crucial to controlling sleep-wake patterns), to experience sleep disturbances, which are  also linked to a myriad of health problems, from obesity to Alzheimer’s disease. As the population steadily grows older and our life expectancy increases, these findings could also apply to people suffering from age-related eye diseases, like macular degeneration. 

Further research into blind people (who do not experience visual dreams) found that subjects do not tend to experience REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, even though they were capable of having vivid sensory dreams. This highlights one of the assumed functions of REM - our eyes may be moving during our dreams because we are scanning the visual environment of our dream world, much in the same way we use our eyes in our waking life. If blind people do not experience REM during dreaming because they are not experiencing a visual dreamworld or visual dream imagery, it seems likely that there is little other purpose for this phenomenon.

I have never asked - or heard reliable anecdotal evidence - from a blind person as to whether it is possible for blind people to lucid dream, but there is no reason why this is not just as possible for blind people as it is for those with sight. The method by which a blind person becomes lucid may differ: for me, I tend to recognise dreamsigns in a non-lucid dream, which triggers a mental or physical reality check and conscious awareness that this is a dream (lucidity via a DILD - Dream-Initiated Lucid Dream). Perhaps blind people are able to recognize non-visual sensory dreamsigns? This would be an extremely interesting topic for an empirical study.

Colourblindness & Dreaming
Studies into colourblind people also reveals the extent to which our dream perception is reflective of our waking experiences. It is predicted that around 8% of males and 0.5% of females with Northern-European heritage suffer from red-green colourblindness and research shows that this visual defect is also present in their dreams. Red-green colourblindness is the most common form of this defect, and accounts for around 99% of those diagnosed with colour-blindness or colour vision deficiency disorders. If a colourblind person loses their colour perception in later life, it seems that their dreams will have normal colour perception - as long as they have sufficient long-term memory of these colours.

People suffering from complete achromatopsia (total colour vision deficiency) since birth, only perceive visual imagery in shades of grey or monochrome (black and white). This is a very rare disorder which is thought to affect approximately 1 on 30,000 people worldwide. Persons with achromatopsia would not dream in colour as they have no perception of what colours look like, and no memories from which to fabricate colours in the dreamworld.

There has also been research into why some people report only (or mainly) dreaming in black and white. In the 1950s, dram researchers assumed that everyone typically dreamed in black and white, and to some extent, this idea has prevailed, with many people questioning if we do indeed dream in colour, or simply perceive our dreams in monochrome and then attribute colours to the memory of the dream upon waking. This theory was put to rest by study by Eric Schwitzgebel, a philosophy professor at the University of California at Riverside. The study published in Studies in History & Philosophy of Science (2000) and suggested that the prevalence of black and white dreams which were observed during the 1950s were likely to be the product of technological advancements during this era - movies and TV were of increasing significance in people's waking lives, and these were displayed in black and white.

One study at the University of Dundee (2008) was able to replicate these findings, claiming that people from the generations who grew up watching black and white TV tended to dream in black and white, despite experiencing the full colour spectrum in their everyday waking lives. Those who grew up post-1960s, when colour TV was more widespread, report dreaming in full colour. 

Deirdre Barrett, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, states that nowadays it is not common for dreamers to report black and white dreams, unless they are heavily exposed to black and white movies or TV.

Sometimes we can't recall colours in dreams. This does not mean that we experienced a black and white dream, simply the colour element of the dream was not vivid or memorable enough to imprint on our memory. The more effective your dream recall is, the more likely you are to remember your experience of colour in a dream. Barrett notes that if you can't remember the colours of your dreams, it may be because you simply don't focus on them or pay attention to them -  this selective perception of sorts is similar to how different people perceive the real world.  Barrett states: 'If I asked you to describe something that happened 2 days ago, you might include no colour in the incident - or you might...If I asked you what colour someone was wearing, you might be able to tell me or not - color just isn't always a salient part of events. The events may be more about the interpersonal aspect, such as navigating or trying to get somewhere, while at other times, colour is significant to whatever we're doing and noticing'.
